Collecting contemporary art is one of the most misunderstood and enigmatic activities that can be observed within the wide range of human behaviors. Art fans – those who visit galleries and collector’s homes – have probably wondered what exactly drives a person to want to own an artwork.

What motivates a certain individual to dedicate part of their financial and life resources to purchasing contemporary art in a constant, continuous and conscious manner? What are a collector’s intentions and expectations when building up their collection? Trying to answer these questions is the main purpose of this study, which does not intend to be exhaustive, but simply aims to create an environment for conversation where we can look into the complex and mysterious decision of purchasing a piece of art.

Based on its protagonists’ voices – 12 Spanish contemporary art collectors –, the book establishes a reflection on the processes that drove them to include a certain number of significant artworks in their collections. The result of those conversations, which took place between December 2014 and November 2016 before a cultivated, open-minded and inquisitive audience, has allowed them to contrast their diverse experiences and systematically analyze that intimate, unique and indescribable moment before and after an art purchase, when, knowing that they were being carried by an inescapable and happy current, they once more said as if a voice spoke through them: “I’ll take it!”
