A monograph of the best images of Juan Gatti, a pivotal artist for anyone interested in understanding the modernization process in Spain—and not merely on the aesthetic level. Gatti is a photographer and designer, and he does whatever is necessary to achieve the desired image; for him the aesthetic is more important than technical virtuosity. His is an unmistakable style, with an impeccable follow-through.
There are texts on Pedro Almodóvar, Alaska, Sybilla, Javier Vallhonrat, Miguel Bosé and Franca Sozzani, with prologues written by Luis Venegas, who maintains that words can be superfluous and that one must go directly to the images because Gatti, for example, knows perfectly well the technique to create seductive images. Other prologues are penned by Rafael Doctor Roncero, who focuses on the figure of Gatti as a designer and who tells us the story of the artist by interspersing texts by Gatti himself. The former introduces the volume dedicated to the photographs of Gatti, and the latter presents the volume that brings together his works of graphic design.
Juan Gatti is the creator of many of the designs found on movie posters and ad campaigns, and of the credit sequences of the renowned films by artists like Almodóvar, the filmmaker with whom he shared one of the most productive relationships in the history of Spanish cinema. This monograph also brings us previously unpublished work by Gatti.
In addition to film, fashion is another of the fundamental realms necessary to understand the work of Gatti, who became the creative director Vogue, Italy.
Gatti has four decades of continuous creative work behind him, and for the first time, his work is brought together in a retrospective book dedicated to his artistic activity as well as in a solo exposition that also features some of his noted collaborations. From there emerge two projects: Ciencias Naturales (Natural Sciences) and Contraluz (Counterlight).
The work of Juan Gatti has been widely recognized by institutions and professionals from an array of fields, which has made him plainly deserving of the Premio Nacional de Diseño (National Design Prize) in 2004, and the Medalla de Oro al Merito en las Bellas Artes (The Distinguished Medal in the Fine Arts) in 2010.
PhotoGraphics reviews the rich universe of the designer through a wide selection of his photographic work. In the volume Photo are portraits of figures such as Penélope Cruz, Pedro Almodóvar, Javier Bardem, Eduardo Noriega, Belén Rueda, Marisa Berenson, Leonor Watling, and Elena Anaya; editorials written for publications like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Hercules, Candy, Yo Dona y GQ; photographs from the book Geografía de la moda española (2009) (Geography of Spanish Fashion); and works done for firms including Zara, Sybilla, Purificación García and Jesús del Pozo, among others.
The second volume, Graphics, brings together a lively survey of his work in the realm of graphic design, collecting designs made for the films of Pedro Almodóvar (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, Átame, Tacones lejanos, Hable con ella, La mala educación, Volver and Los abrazos rotos, among others), unveiling part of his work method, and drawing from early project proposals and various drafts paving the way to final products. Included as well are promotional projects for artists such as Miguel Bosé, works for Vogue, Italy, where he worked as creative director.
