España años 50 (Spain in the 1950s) is a documentary work, a photograph album of the peoples of Spain that the young Carlos Saura discovered on his different journeys around the country. It was an impoverished land full of unpaved streets, adobe and stone houses, rough peasant faces tanned like leather, men whose only form of transport was carts driven by donkeys or mules, beggars, women dressed in black, all with the devastating marks of the recent civil war still visible. Yet it was also a Spain of simple, hardworking folk. This work portraits the life and customs of an era, one that is apparently remote yet sparks in viewers the uncomfortable strangeness of sensing that these landscapes and people are not so distant in time.
