Where does money come from? How does the financial system work? Twenty Red Lights is a photographic reflection on modern capitalism and global financial economy, issues that have rarely been rigorously addressed from an artistic and critical perspective.

In each of these twenty photographs (twenty red lights) the award-winning Spanish photographer and economist Max de Esteban tackles a key concept in contemporary finances. Concepts that might seem technical, but hold important ideological and philosophical ideas.

The book includes three essays which, from different perspectives, dissect the main characteristics of the new global, digital economy governing our world today.

Max de Esteban (Barcelona, 1959) studied Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Barcelona and obtained a PhD in Economics at the Universidad Ramon Llull, as well as a master’s degree at Stanford University. His photographic work has been exhibited at the Deutsche Technik Museum (Berlin), the Paris Rencontres Internationales and the Darmstadter Tage der Fotografie triennial, among others. He has authored three monographs and his book Rodarán cabezas (Heads Will Roll) was selected Photobook of the Year 2014 by Lens Culture.
The exhibition Max de Esteban: Twenty Red Lights is on show at the Virreina Centre de la Imatge (Barcelona) from 10 November 2017.
