Esther Ferrer (Donostia, Spain, 1937), a pioneer in performance art, started to take part in the activities of the Zaj group in 1967. She has since turned action art into her prime creative medium. Nevertheless, since the 1970s, she has returned to non-ephemeral art forms, such as interventions on photographs, installations, paintings based on the series of prime numbers, objects, etc.

In Espacios entrelazados (Interwoven Spaces), the artist walks us through the ten installations that make up her exhibition of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Most of these works have been made with stretch strings and they are presented in four distinct chapters: Las risas del mundo (Laughs of the world), Entrada a una exposición (Entrance to an Exhibition), Instalaciones espaciales (Spatial Installations) and Instalaciones con sillas (Instalations with Chairs). But this book is also a journey into the artist’s creative process, including more than 50 models, drafts, drawings and plans made by Ferrer, as well as an interview between the artist and the curator of the exhibition Petra Joos.

The exhibition Esther Ferrer. Espacios entrelazados will be at the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, from 16 March to 10 June 2018.

Along her extensive career, Ferrer has participated in numerous action-art festivals and has exhibited her work in different museums. He has also received many awards and recognitions: in 1999 she represented Spain in the Venice Biennale, in 2008 she received the National Fine Arts Award, in 2012 she was awarded the Gure Artea Prize by the Basque government, and in 2014 she received the MAV (Women in Visual Arts) Award, the Marie Claire Contemporary Art Award and the Velázquez Fine Art Award.
