This year, Madrid is the guest of honor at Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) in Mexico, maybe the largest and most important Spanish-speaking book fair. A city’s literature is made by those who were born there, those who live there without being native, those who spent some time and found their inspiration there, and even those who, without ever visiting the city, read books about it.
In this special issue of Eñe, we have brought together some seventy authors in order to make, through their memories, a portrait of the city. Also, three different generations have sat together to talk about the Madrid we lost (that of Galdos’ novels, of the literary get-togethers, of the authors who passed away) and the Madrid that remains.
In addition, many of the authors in the Madrid delegation traveling to Guadalajara have shared their talent in the central pages of this issue, which ends with a glance at the city’s libraries.
It is not true that an image is worth a thousand words, but Javier Campano’s photographs do speak a thousand words. They sum up the eternal Madrid by looking at its genuineness with kind irony.
