TRAVEL TO PERSIA is a photographic project carried out in Iran and inspired by the extraordinary route followed by García de Silva y Figueroa to the Court of the Shah of Persia in the 17th Century. The goal of this diplomatic delegation from the times of Spanish King Philip III was to establish an Alliance with Persians against the growing Ottoman power in the Mediterranean, that had become a real threat to European stability.
After this two-year tour, García de Silva y Figueroa wrote a detailed book with the best description of Persia at that time. He was the first western traveller to identify the ruins of Persepolis and the cuneiform signs as a writing system. His passionate remarks and thorough explanations make this book one of the most interesting texts about Middle East in the Modern Age.
Following the notes and comments of this book, the author has made this same tour nowadays. These images are the result of a long research process carried out by the artist with the main goal of claiming the name of such a relevant figure through a photographic dialogue with Silva’s text.
