La Fábrica presents the second volume of the Matador Dictionary of Illustrious Lives: an encyclopedia of live artists and creators whom we admire. Men and women that have provided a unique, personal view on culture. Painters, photographers, novelists, poets, theatre directors, essayists, architects, film directors, actors and actresses, musicians, fashion designers, landscape artists… who interest and amaze us. The Matador Dictionary brings together the voices of extraordinary artists trough original or unpublished works, images and special projects conceived specifically for Matador.
This volume, featuring works of some thirty artists from D to G, starts with an essay by philosopher Patxi Lanceros on the idea of provocation, which defines these creators. This essay leads to a unique cabinet of artists: From writer Don DeLillo—the Dictionary features an unpublished short story by him—to landscape artist Kathryn Gustafson, the pages of this volume include photographic portfolios of Catherine Deneuve, Aretha Franklin and Charlotte Gainsbourg made by photographers such as Raymond Depardon and Jean-Baptiste Mondino. It includes unpublished manuscripts by writer Jeffrey Eugenides and film director Alejandro González Iñárritu; sketches of one of the latest creations of architect Norman Foster—the Vatican Pavilion at the Venice Biennale; an installation specially conceived for Matador by choreographer William Forsythe; the first photographs that Alberto García-Alix ever made, taken from his personal files; a very personal portfolio by photographer Robert Frank; Gustavo Dudamel’s manuscript music scores; illustrator Isidro Ferrer’s personal sketchbooks; a series of works created by Luis Gordillo for Matador… In sum, an extraordinary visual document aiming to enclose our era’s talent within its pages.
Structured in six volumes to be published throughout a period of six years (2017-2022), and born from Matador Magazine with its same spirit, this series will feature over 200 contemporary artists and creators, comprising a project of 1200 pages that stands up for quality and authorship.
